II. JORDY HUINDER
Stylist ___ Guapo Magazine. Nylon Mexico. Link Magazine.
Fashion Director ___ Ilovefake Magazine.
Hi there Jordy, how are you today?
I'm fine, thanks for asking
So let’s begin with the basics, to the uneducated amongst us, how would you describe the role of a fashion stylist?
I see the role of a stylist as a very important one. You create the picture as a team. What would Bert be without Ernie? The photographer is shooting what the stylist put out there, together with the model & make-up/hair artist.
That's what I love, creating with a team
Of course you are building your name as a stylist, was this role one of choice or did you find it to be a natural progression from a different discipline? Is styling a skill you have always possessed?
I like to create a fantasy. I graduated as a fashion designer from art school, but by that point I already knew I wanted to be a stylist. I went to art school to learn to think in concepts. As a stylist I like creating fantasy within a small team. I love magazines, internet, photography, graphics and of course fashion. It's the mix of all that which gets me excited.
Many stylists tend not to pigeon-hole themselves, are you involved in other disciplines?
Styling is the main thing I do and love but I also help to create Ilovefakemazine, of course.
On reflection, do you find your personal style consciously or subconsciously affects the aesthetic you create? How would you describe your personal style?
It's a mix of both because I start with a concept, but at the set it's about the personality of the model. To create a real as it can be picture. At least that is my way of working for Ilovefakemagazine. But I also like to create surrealistic pictures, something with a joke or fucked up twist.
I see my personal style as celebrating the spirit of youth.
What would the general styling process be? Do you instantly sense a certain model in a certain outfit, or is the process very fluid? Within a certain artistic concept we assume?
It depends on the team I am working with. But most of the time it's celebrating the spirit of youth. I would say the process is very fluid.
Would you say you have a signature style?
Yeah sort of but I am still quite a newbie and I would love to develop myself
On the subject of models, is it a stylist’s job to direct a model?
Yes and no. I think again that it's the energy of the whole team together.
We also noticed that most of your styling is photographed against a white background, in the ‘I Love Fake ‘shoot for example. Is this a conscious decision on your part?
For Ilovefakemagazine I did a lot of shoots against white walls because at that moment myself and Jolijn liked the clean way of working. Keep it simple, clean white, hard flash, model and fashion.
To date have you had one stand out shoot that instantly springs to mind as your favourite/most successful?
No not really, but I am most happy about being fashion director of Ilovefakemagazine.
I like my work for Ilovefakemagazine the best.
Do you have any exciting collaborations on the cards that you might like to let ElysumE in on?
Yes I do but I have to keep it a secret for a couple of weeks.
Do you have a muse, fashion related or otherwise?
Fashion related I love ‘Carine Roitfeld,’ I think she's the best. I like all of that edgy chic she is doing. I (still) love Madonna she was my youth idol growing up as a kid.
I remember seeing her on television for the first time. I was five years old and she was performing ‘Like a Virgin,’ live at the MTV music awards. I was in shock and in love at the same time, but then again I was five years old.
If you were to trade places with one person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real Or fictional, who would it be and why?
I would like to be Vincent Gallo. I would stay in all week and touch myself.
If we were to check your bedside table right now, what would we find?
Nothing, I don't have a bedside table. But under my bed, that’s a different story
What was the last book you read?
‘The Power of Now,’ I love Eckhart Tolle
Speaking of, if someone wrote your biography, what would you think the title should be?
Aha I would never agree to a biography
Finally, what was the best thing before they invented sliced-bread?
Unsliced - bread
